This weeks’ exercise was good practice for next Monday’s in class assignment. Although on Monday we’re not expected to do the spine or the back cover of the book it was fun to actually do the entire covers. I had some problems with the pictures again, just couldn’t find pictures that’d fitted my original plan so I had to adjust it a bit, but overall I think it turned out just fine.

I’m a bit out of ideas for next weeks assignment but I’m sure I’ll get there before Monday. Today I’m planning to try to do as much as I can on it.

It was a lot harder to design the page yourself than to just copy it. At the same time it was more fun as well as we could choose the stories and we had to edit them to fit the page. I had an international theme and it was quite easy to choose the leading stories and nibs. However I found it hard to come up with good headlines this week. All the headlines in the articles I had chosen were rather long so I had to write new one to every story and to be honest, it was hard as the space available was so limited.

Making a magazine page by copying the sample taught me quite a lot.

Not having to concentrate on finding the right photo etc. I paid more attention to the headlines and the page’s layout.

Think of the right headline that could not just fit the space left for it but also make the readers aware of the story and make them want to read more was fun and educational.

I also enjoyed picking the stories and making decisions on which is the leading story and which ones are left to be just nibs.

This Monday we took a look at the last assignment we are going to produce in this module; a magazine. Well actually we looked at the market research we need to do before we get to do the magazine. It is going to include figures, vox pops with the target audience, flat plan, mocked-up pages and we have to be very clear on what the magazine is about and who is it for. It cannot be about us, it has to be about the market.

In the workshop we did a feature page and this time I finally got a hold on how to place the pictures properly, it definitely took longer than expected. Otherwise I think it wasn’t too hard at all. At first I managed to have the fourth column linked to the three others even though it had a differet story on it but I even somehow managed to fix that. I might have to go back and do it couple more times so I won’t repeat that mistake every week but would hopefully remember on the first try how it is done properly.

The first assesment will be a book cover so the latest workshop we spent designing book covers. I decided to go with an idea that would let me contrast the theme in the cover. I found a picture of a crowd of people and decided to use it as a backgroung and then i choose a simple white font and black background for the title to keep it simple. The picture already had many colours so I felt that more colours would make the cover look messy. The book ended up to consist of true stories of loneliness.

The cover illustrtes how someone can feel all alone even if surrounded by hundreds of people.

It’s amazing what kind of difference can a good picture make. In today’s Metro the picture in the front page was lacking colour and the whiteness of it was disturbing. Then, amusingly enough, in the workshop I still experienced some problems with images. Now I learned how to change the size of the photo in a safe way but for some reason I just couldn’t fit the photo to the frame I had for it.

I don’t find the program too difficult but definitely need more practice with it. However the basics haven’t been too hard to learn. Well besides the problems I’ve been having with the images, I guess.

In this week’s workshop I definitely got a better feel to the designing process and to the program.

I learned how to use colours, adjust the colours and add pictures to the page. However I still need more practice to make sure I won’t spread the image when adjusting it.
